Glam Punk Rock. What is it? Is it rock, is it Glam or is it just punk?

No, it represents the fusing of three different musical styles. Glam Punk, Glam Rock and Punk Rock are three distinct but related musical styles.

Glam Rock is a musical style that originated in the early 1970’s in England. With performers like Gary Glitter, Kiss and Alice Cooper. They combined elements of Rolling Stone inspired stylings with lyrics based on typical rock and roll themes.

The performers cultivated a certain look and they were shocking to more conservative cultural elements with their futuristic dress and Hollywood elements.

Punk Rock is a style of counter culture music that originated in England and the US. It achieved its prominence in England in the late 1970’s with performers like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols.

Punk Rock lyrics usually focused themselves on politics and youth movement issues. Punk Rock took a very hard liberal approach to many social issues and made those positions very clear in their lyrics. Punk Rock had an element of anger as many of the lyrics were shouted as much as sung.

Glam Punk attempted to infuse punk elements into typical Glam rock creating a new distinct style of music. The style of Glam punk never rose to the level of either punk rock or Glam rock, but the style as influential on groups in the 1980’s such as Guns and Rose and Cinderella. They took a Glam rock look but had lyrics that might be at home in a punk rock song.
